What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #45
We are huge advocates of exercise and play with dogs, but the missing link for so many issues that owners are struggling with. The art of doing nothing, is a valuable behavior for dogs to learn. Folks struggle with it on a couple of levels, some folks feel that their dogs need to always be doing something and they strive to make the dog exhausted in order to be calmn, meanwhile building an athlete who will need lots of exercise to upkeep the dog. If that is what you are looking for that is fine, i love a great working dog. Being a family dog trainer and rehabber though, families usually have different requirements, needs and issues as well as problems.
Also some folks feel that the dog is sad if they see the dog doing nothing on command, they feel the dog should always be doing something always be “happy”, lots of times when a dog is doing things we do not agree with or like when a dog might be looking sad. Lots of folks are not used to see a dog doing nothing unless, the dog is sleeping or exhausted.
